Barbarian QueenBarbarian Queen, oil on panel. This came out of a sketch I did at the Melbourne Art Guild, of model Hope on a divan. It occurred to me to translate it to a painting that would emulate the artist Frank Frazetta, known for his fantasy art and paintings of barbarian warriors and their women. So I changed the blue divan to this low, armless, and green thing, and, oh yeah, I added a tiger and the jewelry. Hope is obviously very muscular, which helped suggest the Frazetta treatment. She also has a large dragonfly tattoo on her back so I put the small ankle one here. Here is a famous example of Frazetta's art used as cover for an Edgar Rice Burroughs book of John Carter's adventures on Mars: |
